“The traitor returns,” noted Sirius, as James collapsed onto his bed.

“You’re not really pissed I decided to go home for Christmas, are you?” asked James, rolling his eyes. “I know we said we were all going to stay, but…”

“Nah, we had a better time without you,” Sirius assured him. “You always put Peter in an awful mood. He told me he was glad you didn’t stay.”

“Don’t lie, Padfoot,” said Peter defensively. “I didn’t say that.”

    “He did,” mouthed Sirius.

“In other news,” said Remus, who was seated at the desk, flicking through the newspaper; “Sirius blew up three different rooms and at least two chairs.”

“It’s a fantastic spell I just found, Prongs,” Sirius elaborated enthusiastically. “And technically, Moony, it was only two rooms. Two rooms and a closet.”

“Filch’s closet,” Peter told James, who looked duly impressed.

“The ceiling is still singed,” said Sirius proudly. “I’ll take you by later… I’m thinking of having a go at his desk.”

“Well, you lot had a more interesting time than I did,” James stated. “Once you’ve lived at a person’s house, Padfoot, they get sort of used to having things explode or disappear from time to time… I’d forgotten how boring my parents are.”

The Life and Times, Chapter 13

    Parenting is hard. No. Really.

All throughout Lily’s pregnancy James heard people tell him how awful having a baby will be; crying, crying and more crying. It wasn’t until the first night that James realized how hard having a baby really would be.

Lily, thankfully, breastfed. That meant that James only had to get up once or twice a night to change Harry’s nappy. By the time Harry started to shift to being bottle-fed though, James had no excuse.

James would grumble out of bed, only after having a pillow thrown at him by Lily, and stagger into Harry’s room. There his son would be, wailing for no reason whatsoever.

After a few weeks, Harry seemed to understand that James was the one to expect at night. A few times Harry would cry, only to stop and smile once he saw his Dad walk in.

To try to soothe him, James would talk quietly to him. At first it would be a make-shift fairy tale, “Then the Princess and the Unicorn galloped into the swamp, only to see a Cornish Pixie making all the Bowtruckle’s dance-badly, might I add.”

When he finally ran out of ideas for stories, James began to talk about things that were on his mind. He never went into much detail, he just told stories of his adventures at Hogwarts (leaving out the drinking, snogging, and illegal activities of course) and how Harry would be brilliant at Quidditch, whether he wanted to be or not. “It’s in your blood, that is unless you’ve got your Mother’s Quidditch abilities. In which case, you should never step foot near a broom.”

Soon enough, James began to look forward to these late-night sessions with Harry. Holding his son, talking about the past or Harry’s future calmed James, more so than it seemed to calm Harry. The War, the friends he’s lost, it all seemed to melt away in these moments. Nothing seemed to matter as he rocked his son in his arms.

  • You heard James?” said Lupin, in a strange voice.
“Yeah …” Face dry, Harry looked up. “Why—you didn’t know my dad, did you?”
“I—I did, as a matter of fact,” said Lupin. “We were friends at Hogwarts.

It is completely unfair to say James didn’t deserve Lily, he deserved her just as much as Snape did. Snape is brave in a way because he died for someone he loved, but don’t demote James because James did the exact same thing, except he proved to Lily before it was to late that he was the better candidate for her love. Snape isn’t a better man because he stayed a coward longer then James did. James grew up, sure he did something in school that I’m sure he wasn’t proud of, but wasn’t it James who saved Snape from werewolf Lupin. James saved a person who he despised, who he hated with his entire being, and whether you are deluded enough to see it like Snape did or you are smart enough to see that James risked his life to save Snape, because James knew very well what Snape meant to Lily, and he put his life on the line to save someone important to her. James is just as good as Snape, the only difference being Lily picked him because he showed her he was willing to grow up for her before Snape could.
And I’m going to tag this as Snape so all his little fan boys and girls can come after me. BRING IT ON BABY.

Snape was constantly bullied by his peers? Really? You make it sound like he was this losers loner who only had Lily as a friend. Snape, if you recall, did a bit of bullying of his own with his “death eater” friends, and Lilly called him on it and what did he say? “It was a laugh”. I hate the fact that Snape fan boys and girls judge James because of one scene in one book from Snape’s point of view. And I’m sorry but the “Lily hated James” argument  is invalid. I know we have the Harry and Draco dynamic in which to parallel James and Snape. I just wish there was something like that for the James and Lily relationship. You know, a muggle-born witch who meets a pure-blood wizard on a train and ends up clashing with him. Outwardly hating him and calling him names but really she kind of fancies him just doesn’t want to admit it and they end up together in their 7th year and later marry and have children. I wish there was something to parallel James and Lilly.
Stop rolling your eyes and open them, Lily did not hate James she fancied him, It’s called reading between the lines.
The sunlight was dazzling on the smooth surface of the lake, on the bank of which the group of laughing girls who had just left the Great Hall were sitting with shoes and socks off, cooling their feet in the water.
Lupin had pulled out a book and was reading. Sirius stared around at the students milling over the grass, looking rather haughty and bored, but very handsomely so. James was still playing with the Snitch, letting it zoom farther and farther away, almost escaping but always grabbed at the last second.
Harry noticed his father had a habit of rumpling up his hair as though to make sure it did not get too tidy, and also that he kept looking over at the girls by the water’s edge.
It was one of the girls from the lake edge. She had thick, dark red
hair that fell to her shoulders and startlingly green almond-shaped
eyes — Harry’s eyes.
Harry’s mother …

“Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you’ve just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch,”
How do you know what he was doing? Looks like Wormtail wasn’t the only one watching James’s every move.
Also…
“I’m just trying to show you they’re not as wonderful as everyone seems to think they are.” The intensity of his gaze made her blush.
Why blush Lily? Because Snape just called you out as being one of the people who think he’s so wonderful maybe?
But I digress. James was a great man. In a world where werewolves were shunned James embraced one as a friend and spent years honeing a hard skill just to give that friend some comfort. His home became somewhat of a safe haven for his best friend who’s home life was unsatisfactory. And when that friend was 16 and left home It’s was James’s house he moved in to. In a time of war he could have easily sat back and hid behind his Pure-blood status but chose to fight for what was right.
Snape… became a death eater who loved a muggle-born but sat by and did nothing as his friends did their best to rid the world of people like the girl he loved. And only changed sides after realizing *he done fucked up*

…I think there’s something to be said about a certain passage:

‘Well, I mean, I’d already let in that one of Davies’s, so I wasn’t feeling all that confident, but I dunno, when Bradley came towards me, just out of nowhere, I thought—you can do this! And I had about a second to decide which way to fly, you know, because he looked like he was aiming for the right goalhoop— my right, obviously, his left—but I had a funny feeling that he was feinting, and so I took the chance and flew left—his right, I mean—and—well—you saw what happened,’ he concluded modestly, sweeping his hair back quite unnecessarily so that it looked interestingly windswept and glancing around to see whether the people nearest to them—a bunch of gossiping third-year Hufflepuffs—had heard him. ‘And then, when Chambers came at me about five minutes later—What?’ Ron asked, having stopped mid-sentence at the look on Harry’s face. ‘Why are you grinning?’

‘I’m not,’ said Harry quickly, and looked down at his Transfiguration notes, attempting to straighten his lace. The truth was that Ron had just reminded Harry forcibly of another Gryffindor Quidditch player who had once sat rumpling his hair under this very tree. ‘I’m just glad we won, that’s all.’

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix [Chapter 31; O.W.L.s]

So obviously there’s a direct comparison between Ron Weasley and James Potter— and I think that’s done for a reason. This scene was directly after Harry had been feeling doubtful about his father’s love for Lily, as well as what kind of man he’d originally thought his father to be. After seeing how awful Snape’s worse memory portrayed James to be, when he saw James ruthlessly and mercilessly humiliate Snape in the Great Lawn, he didn’t think all those comparisons to his father should be something of a praise. Even after Sirius and Lupin reassured him that it wasn’t anything to be worried about, that James’ over-confidence was just the typical behavior of a fifteen year old and that he grew out of it eventually— it was seeing Ron acting similarly that really made Harry feel better about his father’s image. There’s no denying that Ron has acted like a jerk, or has said the wrong thing at the wrong time more often than not, but that didn’t mean Ron, like James, wasn’t a good-hearted person. No one knows Ron better than Harry does, and he knows that Ron’s heart is always in the right place, despite how he might act towards Hermione (as well as James’ behavior towards Lily). It’s also the very typical behavior of most, if not all, teenage boys; and I’m not saying it justifies any sort of bullying or showing off— but the reality of it is, that it’s how boys act. It doesn’t necessary mean they’re bad people or should be bashed on solely one phase of their life, because they do eventually grow up. And grow up, they did. Because they both became two of the biggest heroes in the series: James, sacrificing his life without a second thought to save his son, thereby giving Harry a natural defense against Voldemort; and Ron, Harry’s ever-loyal best friend, the one who literally opened Harry up to the Wizarding World and helped him understand the true meaning of friendship. They are undeniably two of the most heroic and bravest characters in the series.

So in my opinion, Ron being compared to James is the best compliment or reprieve James can get (and vice versa). It means that James could not possibly have been simply a horrible, arrogant jerk or a bully without any regard for consequence, or that he somehow forced Lily to love him. Ron didn’t force Hermione to love him, did he? Hermione, as shown since the day she pretty much met him, loved Ron for Ron. For his bravery, his strength and passion, his determination, even for his “emotional range of a teaspoon.” Obviously Lily must have felt the same way about James, that even despite James’ outward behavior, his inward personality was as amazing as Ron’s.

It means, like Ron, James would’ve been one of the best people Harry could’ve ever known.

    Awesome post is awesome.

I always felt that James and Ron were kindred spirits. If Harry wanted to know what his father was really like he need only look at his best friend.

“Where did you go?” asked Harry, staring at him.

“Your dad’s place,” said Sirius. “Your grandparents were really good

about it; they sort of adopted me as a second son. Yeah, I camped out

at your dad’s during the school holidays.

Ron did the exact same thing for Harry.
